Preparing for asbestos survey

Success in anything usually starts with proper planning and preparation. As an asbestos abatement or surveyor, you need to possess good planning skills so that you can conduct your work fast and efficiently. Remember that while you are working, you are being a bother to the family whose house you are working from. Customers want to be able to return to their normal life as soon as possible and that will mean that you work fast. The only way you work fast is by ensuring that you start by conducting proper preparation.

This article will highlight some of the steps you should take as part of your preparation.

Start by observing safety

Personal safety and the safety of the people who may interact with the workspace and even you should be the first priority. Safety is only ensured by making sure that you wear all the necessary protective gear for all projects that involve asbestos. It is very tempting not to wear your full-face mask gear when performing a DIY test using a testing kit, but that should never happen.

All protective gear, including disposable overalls, face mask, disposable gloves, and gum boots among others should be worn prior to starting the work. The protective gear should be in good condition without and faults. You are advised to check and test all the gear you will be wearing in advance.

Put up signs

This is where the safety of other people comes in after you have ensured your own. It is in fact a requirement by the law and a matter of common sense to have appropriate signs put up to show anybody who may come to the workspace that there is work in progress. Besides having signs up, you should also keep an eye up in case somebody comes rushing into your workspace without the necessary protective gear.

In case somebody has to come into the work space, it is very important to ensure that they are wearing a full protective suit. The signs should be placed in places where they are easily visible to anybody trying to access the site. You should also put up barriers that block access to your site of work. This warns people and keeps them safe from possible exposure.

Cover vents, turn off ventilation, and remove personal belongings

Covering vents is important because it keeps airborne asbestos fibers confined in the area where work is going on. Air conditioning should also be turned off because it tends to suck air from interior space to the outside hence releasing microscopic fibers to the environment.

The space where you are working should be cleared of all personal belongings. The reason for this is that if personal belongings are in the room, then airborne fibers will settle on them and transfer them to other places. For instance, in case you wear clothing that has the fibers, then you will inhale them and develop cancer. Asbestos survey can then begin when all these have been accomplished.
